Iceland is home to two primal elements: volcanoes and rain. Now, these two ingredients may seem over-simplified, but when we break them down into their base components, you have the making of endless possibilities.
Volcanoes build islands, create mountains and generate strange geological formations like the basalt towers found all across Iceland. Rain shapes the earth, erodes mountains, carves canyons, creates rivers and makes waterfalls.
When we fit these two primal elements together, we get an endless array of strange volcanic cascades. Many of these falls have become quite famous thanks to Instagram. Seen here, Svartifoss is a lone giant nestled amid an amphitheater of volcanic basalt columns. Not seen are the ga-gillion tourists cramped together on the observation deck leading up to the falls. . .
